The problem

UK average house prices increased by 9.6%over the year to January2022.

TheaverageUKhousepricewas £274,000 in January2022, which is£24,000higher than this timelast year. Office for national statistics

Justa table? From the information gathered it came to my attention how such a large increase in the prices of properties in the UK would mean that there is a much higher chance of buyers to compromise on things such as size to keep in their budget. As a result, furniture that offers multiple uses may increase in interest for a person to utilize their interior space.

From the ideation sketches I have chosen the highlighted design to develop further considering the aesthetics of the style board.

Developing the design further considering the features I would like to incorporate. I am trying to add as many different additional uses to the design as possible to make the most use out of the floor space that would usually be just a table. The CAD render (Fusion360) is the final design. I chose to change the drawers from two to one large drawer to conveniently store larger items such as throws and slippers.

Existing sofas After ideating and choosing to develop the sofa I start to look at their existing sofas and the materials used which I will consider when modelling the design.

Wooden former from CNC used to create the frame held together with wooden slats either screwed or with galvanised staples and glue. Cardboard sheets with webbing used to add strength to outside arm and back. 1” blue foam to be used on exterior. MDF wood was used for this model, full size this would be plywood. Manufacture

Introduce a piece of furniture to Apple in partnership with their gaming platform Apple arcade. You must combine two brands together making sure the design compliments their design language, brand identity and values.

I have chosen McDonald’s as the client. In their restaurants there are already Apple iPads readily available today for customers to use with a small selection of games to play, aiming at younger children. Who?

Why?

Adding to the Apple presence throughout the restaurants through the pairing of the games and seating area. Additional comfort when gaming adding a sense of brand relationship with the iPads.

Help push subscriptions to the gaming platform.

Developing the design through model making using blue foam to carve the desired shapes. From the initial form I wanted to consider the ergonomics of the chair more. I chose to deepen the seat and add somewhat of a neck rest with the front to add comfort for the legs.. The bottom back of the chair was changed as an added aesthetic. Develop

The interior

Collaborating with another design student (interior) this was the space designed helping me gage the design direction for the furniture. I will be designing two different seating options with matching coffee tables for section A and D in the lounge.

From developing my designs in CAD form (Fusion360) we have chose the highlighted designs for the lounge. I am going to make a 1/5 scale model of the below design. The seat is fully upholstered.
